DNFing this

i really wanted to enjoy this, and i did love the cultural aspects — both the depiction of Muslim families and growing up in Australia. the plot just was not gripping enough to hold my attention :(

I loved this book so much. Evocative, poetic and tender. I loved reading about a cultural Australian experience so different from my own, the experience of growing up queer as a Muslim Australian and the impact that familial trauma has on a family through generation. It reminded me of Ocean Vuong's work. Very impressive for a debut and can't wait to read more from this author.

DNF - I feel like I have to throw in the towel with this book. I had such high hopes! But unfortunately it wasn’t for me. Some authors are able to pull off not using quotation marks, but in this case Sakr made the novel more confusing, as at times there was no clear line between what was said and who had said it. It tried to be poetic whilst giving factual information about the plot and that overcomplicated things. I just couldn’t get into it, and don’t know that I’d pick up a book by this author again.
