As always with anthologies there are some stories you really like, some which are interesting but just okay, and one or two which completely mystify you as to why they were selected at all. This is no exception, but the last 2 stories certainly pulled my rating up from 3.5 to 4 stars. Some of the stories are very obviously Valdemar/Heraldic, but a few are just set in a similar world with no specific references back.

I cannot believe it!! M.L.'s contribution to this collection of short stories is a spoof! I laughed so hard when it hit me, and I couldn't explain it to anyone because they wouldn't have understood why it was so unexpected.

Another Anthology from Mercedes Lackey. While I appreciate that she lets people play in her universe, I would rather have more stories from her. Still, not a bad group of stories to give you another taste of Valdemar.

i've always loved the valdemar books but this one is a little lacking. some of the stories are not, but some aren't which i guess is pretty typical of an anthology.

"Moving Targets" is the fourth Valdemar anthology, I believe. I quite like the way Lackey invites other authors to play in her backyard, so to speak. It's like authorized fan fiction, really.

I liked all the stories, but my favourite is probably the final story, "Widdershins" by Judith Tarr. That could be because it has to do with the bond between horses and riders, something which Tarr well understands, as she raises and trains Lippizaners. The title story is a bit odd at first, but when I realized that Mercedes Lackey was actually spoofing "Scooby-Do," I really got into it.

I didn't like some of the stories of this anthology. It seems to me that Sword of Ice and Sun of Glory were much better Valdemar Anthologies, but perhaps I just feel that way because I have read them more often.

Although, those two do have a lot more tie-ins between the books (which are my favorite short stories to read since they make the most sense) rather than original fiction set in the world of Velgarth.
