The last installment if the Harper Hall of Pern series follows Piemur as he has to find his new place in the Harper Hall after his voice changes. The story follows Piemur 's journey, and antics, as he finds his own way in the world.

I did enjoy this book, but it was not my favourite in the trilogy. I was not a fan of Pimur’s character for the majority of the book. While he did care about his friends and the job given to him by the master Harper, I found his constant complaining about how he did not have a fire lizard to annoying and a negative aspect. Admittedly he is a 14 year old boy, but it did destruct form his better qualities.
The story otherwise was interesting, I did wish more time was spent trying to figure out the mystery of the large number of fire lizards was.

I remember distinctly not liking this book as much as the other two of this series when I read it back as a child (oh, yes I was doing a reread bit for a couple days), but it turns out that it's actually a fun book! I think it was just that Ms McCaffrey changed the focus of the story from my beloved friend Menolly and moved over to a newer face with Piemur. Piemur isn't a bad sort, just a rather impetuous boy who gets in a lot of trouble. There is some fun with the politics of Pern in the background and I found it to be as always a sweet and short read.

I’m curious why the author chose to write this book from the perspective of a different character. It is still a good book, but I was not expecting a different perspective going in. The book brings us back to the world of Pern and follows the adventures of Piemur, who seems to get himself in all sorts of trouble. Mellony is very much present throughout, either by being there or through Piemur’s memories/lessons from her. Pern is an interesting world and I am glad that I got exposed to this series. While the series has definitely aged, I think it can fine love with older children looking for a clean fantasy series. Perfect for kids transitioning from middle grade to teen books.

Although this isn't my favorite of the Harper Hall trilogy, I enjoyed this book.

01/27/2019: I re-read this book. So glad to be in the Pern world again.

02/22/2020: Reread

02/21/24: Reread. I noticed that I read these books in January or February.
