A good book to give you a different perspective on Ghana’s women and some of the experiences that they could go through. Clearly you can draw many parallels between your life and what these women go through which is part of what makes it such a good book for me. I liked the two parallel stories which illustrates how different two people can experience the same situation.

I struggled with this book; while I appreciated that the characters were realistic and flawed, I had no interest in what happened to them. When Selasi and Akorfa's friendship fractured, I wasn't hoping for reunification. Some of the prose was pretty but not strong enough to rate this higher. Medie's other novel is highly rated too so I'm tempted to try that out. I appreciated the background of Ghanian culture but otherwise, this book wasn't for me.

This was a well written book that reveals how every story has multiple sides. I kind of wish the Selasi and Akorfa chapters were interwoven instead of one big chunk after another because I didn’t really like having to start back over in time at Selasi’s part. I also wish there was more of a resolution, but I guess that’s how real life is.

i am in love with this book. from the beginning, you see the threads of longing, of what might have been—but only in part 2 does the book really show what it's made of. this is a powerful examination of intergenerational trauma and the lasting effects of abuse. it is about coming home, physically, emotionally, familially. and it is a slowburn friends-to-enemies-to-friends story, a story of learning how to grapple with the harm we do and the harm we experience. my favorite so far of the women's prize longlist this year.
