Between the ending and the art, in the best way possible, I’m on edge. Also the small story with an innocent guy who goes between the good and bad things people do…wow

I've heard so many good things about this book for years, and I never got to reading it, but now that I have, I don't think it was worth it. It may be my fault for watching the movie before reading the comic, which was so much worse, but still, I don't see the hype.

Maybe it's because I'm reading this now on its own and without the context of the Batman comics that came out around this time, but I don't think it makes much sense.
Like what's with the photography? He only uses it to take pictures of Babs, and that's it? Also, I think this backstory was pretty lame. I like the idea of it, but not how it was executed. I also like the idea of comparing how differently Batman and the Joker have responded to their respective traumas and I thought that was done fine. Also, the whole part about Joker trying to make James Gordon go insane felt lazy to me? There are better ways to make (or try to make) someone go crazy...

Backs to Babs, as a Batgirl lover, I don't really like that this turned her into the Oracle, but whatever, I guess that's not necessarily a critique of the story, just my personal preference. Either way, the way they treated her was gross and is just another example of the objectification of women that seems to be ingrained in comic books. Barbara is not her own person (and neither is Joker's wife), just a plot device for Commissioner Gordon's story to progress. She deserves better. Even if the rest of the book was great, I don't think I could like it with what they did to her.

The coloring in this version was a lot better than the original! I appreciated the artwork.

Also, also, in the back of the Deluxe Version, they have the short story, "An Innocent Guy", and all I have to say to that is, wouldn't Batman's cowl be bulletproof??

The art was some of the best I've seen in a comic book, and the story is interesting, if not ground breaking.
