Lyrical, hopeful, and heartbreaking. A perfect book for the present time, as again, again, AGAIN, Americans direct hatred and suspicion at "others."

This book is told in verse describes the Cuban Missile Crisis from the perspective of a young girl with family in Cuba. It covers the many prejudices that occurred in America during that time and the major sadness that she felt as a result.

It is a new way to describe the time period. It provides a fresh way for young teens to understand the impact of Communist relations during the 1960s.

04/01/19 I was surprised that this is actually a poetry book. I still don’t feel like I “get” poetry but this collection was okay.

This is a beautifully-written, heart-wrenching poetic memoir about a Cuban-American girl growing up during the conflicts surrounding the October Crisis between Cuba and the U.S. Bittersweet and hopeful, and definitely thought-provoking, the memories and ideas expressed really hit you.

I love books written in verse.
They have a way of portraying emotion that seems more authentic to me.
This one was about a girl who is a Cuban American. Once the Cold War starts and relations between the US and Cuba deteriorate she grapples with what that means for her family.
I enjoyed the characters and it was beautifully written. The author did a great job of capturing the voice of a growing girl.
