Well... this would have been better if I had read it while in my teens and not at 42. All I kept thinking was "Törless is a dumb fuck who thinks things have to 'mean something' to be worth the experience."

Törless is clueless, Beineberg is the pseudo-spiritualist who makes an ass of himself every time he opens his mouth, Reiting is the little fucker everyone loves to hate and Basini is the victim who does not see it as such. They held zero interest for me and I felt a total disconnect to the mores and sensibilities of the time.

I was never the biggest fan of macho crap so cherished by dirt-bags and assholes, my reaction to this novel is welcomed proof that things haven't changed much.

خوب.
خوندن‌ش آسون نبود. رمان در ترسیم روابط قدرت کاملاً درست عمل کرده. خردستیزی و هموفوییای فاشیستی رو دقیق توصیف کرده.

This story of teenagers who allow themselves to persecute one of their own because they consider him inferior saw by others as a premonition of Nazism. But this book also tells us about the victim's behavior, ideas, and calculations that lead the torturers and victims to humiliate and allow themselves to have done, respectively. The inner life and how it is shaken or stimulated by adolescence were well described independently of the history of persecution or perhaps in connection with it. The Confessions (plural) of the pupil Törless do not speak to us only of persecution of school harassment. They are also present throughout the novel, the concern linked to our place in the world at the dawn of the 20th century, the theme of adolescence, pederasty and the search for one's sexuality, belief and doubt in the school institution, the quest for meaning, etc. It was a vibrant, well-written novel with images whose central theme is brand and education.

Difficult and dense, despite its small page count, but the sort of book that adds up to more when completed than when it's still unfolding. I may revisit this one later, but now I'm all the more interested in Musil's "Man Without Qualities".
