A brilliant book filling in so many narratives that make up American history, but that have been often left out before. Takaki writes in an engaging way and I particularly appreciate his use of poetry, popular songs, and literature to demonstrate his points and to let the voices from those times express themselves.

An absolute must read for everyone. This book provides solid factual information about the meaning of race and how it has change in America through the centuries. It provides various points of view and let me to rethink my heritage, views and my conversations with others.

This was probably not the best book to listen to as an audiobook. It has a lot of facts and stats, and I feel like I zoned out quite a bit. This was an interesting overview of the history of the US from various racial/ethnic viewpoints, but in trying to cover so many different groups over such a long time period, it did feel disconnected at times.

This book was a very difficult read because, throughout, I was confronted with the lies of white people and the truth of minorities subjected to centuries of white violence against them.
This book was also very educational, well written, and honest. I appreciate the authors failure to mince words or sugar coat anything.
I also love the Shakespearan allusion and metaphor throughout to explain how different immigrant groups or native groups were treated in this country. It makes the narrative more seamless.

This is the American history they don't teach you in public school. Definitely easy to read and worth your time!

Ah inspiring work, not a complete history of the US, but a full history of the United States. Takaki was a wonderful thinker and what he put down in this book is inspiring to say the least.

It was certainly eye-opening to read this book. Takaki writes from a historical perspective that not many history books write from. I'm glad I have this book on my bookshelf.
