3 ⭐ for the first half
2⭐ for the second
Evie's thoughts and narration got really repetitive. I had high hopes for this and was a bit let down.

I was super excited when I saw this, since Ella Enchanted was /so good/, but this one just didn't quite do it for me. I don't know why, but the characters and situation didn't seem as engaging, and I found myself skimming after a while just to get through. Oh well. I'm disappointed that this one didn't live up to expectations, but Ella will still always be a classic.

Liked returning to Ella's world and learning more about ogres, her parents' backstory, and just how long Lucinda's been making a mess of things. Evie is a delightful character in her own right, independent and smart and good-natured even as she struggles to hold onto herself. It was fun trying to guess how Evie and the others all fit into the larger, later stories.

Lucinda is at her best. She takes a girl and makes her an ogre for denying love. Now forced to find love she may just learn a real lesson. This takes place before our lovely Ella Enchanted and some friends we know and love make an appearance.
If you have any love for fun fantasy you may want to try this one out.

Okay Evie and Eleanor should have gotten married, I don't make the rules.

Aside from the fact that my sapphic ship didn't sail though, this book was a lot of fun! It wasn't as amazing as Ella Enchanted, but I enjoyed myself, and it made me sooo nostalgic.

A prequel to Ella Enchanted? That book practically WAS my childhood. I don't even know how many times I read it! So obviously I need this in my life.

Oh lord... there's a lot to say about this book and not all of it is good. I LOVED Ella Enchanted. I can remember the first time I read it and I regularly re-read it because it brings me so much joy. Having said that, I was THRILLED to find out we were revisiting Frell and before Ella Enchanted takes place! Unfortunately, The main character, Evie, left me missing the wit and fun that Ella brought. There were times when Evie was genuinely funny and I loved it but mostly she was bland and I felt the story was a bit meandering and predictable. I also NEVER want to hear the word "Tingle" again!
I would say this book would be good for someone, ages 8-12, who has devoured Ella Enchanted for the first time and is looking for more magic in Frell.

Book #5 of Olympic Games Readathon, Team Apollo. Read a book you predict will be a 5 star read.

Well, I was right. I wasn't sure in the middle of it that it would be a 5 star. I felt like it dragged in the middle and rushed the ending. But with the nostalgia feels and enough of the characters from the original Ella Enchanted, I ended up really enjoying this. I had a hard time liking Evie because she's so analytical, but in true Gail Carson Levine style and reminiscent of Ella, she takes matters into her hands of her own fate. Also, the more I learned about Wormy (although the name is still silly), the more I loved the two of them together.

I think any Ella Enchanted fan would enjoy this.

You don't need to be familiar with the world of Ella Enchanted to appreciate this companion book. It takes place before Ella. An interesting look at how it would feel to be a human in an ogre's body, and also look at the meaning of friendship and love. Recommended for fantasy fans, grades 4 & up.
