this is gonna end up in my 2023 comfort reads! The story hooks you from the very first chapters and it is so easily to relate to the grumpy -but passionate and strong willed bookworm, Emily Wilde, a scholar who studies faerie lore and traditions! (I loved that for once it’s the main character to be the grumpy one and the love interest to be the sunshine one in the relationship)!

The writing format was journal entries and it felt like you were actually reading Emily’s accounts about her adventures and her meetings with ✨the Folk✨. Everything connected to faeries gave me the cruel prince vibes which I loved! The book also included footnotes as if some parts were actually taken from a proper encyclopaedia of faeries lol!

I loved the writing style, the prose was so well done and fit the story well. The characters were quirky and cute as well.

I guess I was just bored throughout most of this? I was just ready to be done with it lmao. Maybe it’s because I was in a slump already, but I just didn’t vibe with the storyline.

It was just very slow paced and more focused on the research aspect, I tend to enjoy more character focused novels!

I’ll definitely tune in to the sequel and will hopefully enjoy it more! It wasn’t a bad book at all, just not my taste.

I didn't like this character and I didn't like this writing style - or I'm just not in the mood for this right now. Skimmed to the end

3.75 ⭐ /5 (rounded to 4)

The only reason I'm not quite giving this 4 stars is because it took me almost 100 pages to start enjoying the book.

Once the action and events started happening that's when I became invested in the story. Emily is quite the character and Wendell is a delight. However, it did take me a while to warm up to him. I'm curious to see how the rest of their story goes in the next book. I'm hopeful for a touch more romance as their friendship blossoms and they become more honest with their feelings.

The story itself was a fun fantasy. I did quite enjoy it. I love the faeries and the research of them. Overall it was a nice read. Good enough for me to continue the story when the next book comes out.
