My library hold coming in for this a week before the US election has to be some sort of sign, right? I've read a couple books this week that I'm glad to have read now, because who knows how I'll feel reading them after Tuesday...

Anyway, all that aside, this was a solid memoir. It's from 2019, so it doesn't cover any of Harris' time as VP, but what she does discuss of her political career is interesting. Most of the book is dedicated to her professional career (and her opinions on various topics), with some personal bits (her mother, her family) blended in. I like how the memoir was balanced between topics, and how human she felt. In the past few months, it's fairly evident that Harris is good at being personable, and it comes across in this book.

I had never read a political memoir before, but I liked the way the structure if this book interwove personal narrative with the development of deep convictions, which then give rise to political policy. I actually liked that it felt a little heavy on the political action and policy side of things. If anyone has any doubts as to what the Vice President has done in her career as attorney general of CA or in the senate, The Truths We Hold provides a good look behind the curtain, especially with regard to semate committees shrouded in intelligence secrecy. A worthwhile look at a defining political figure of this moment in American history.

This is exactly what I would expect from a Senator or District Attorney’s book. The book is broken into 10 chapters, so buckle up for each one to be long and at times confusing. I enjoyed when Kamala went into personal anecdotes that revealed more about her on an emotional level, but those were few and far between. I would’ve liked to see her become more vulnerable. This book was published Pre-COVID, Pre-Vice Presidency, and now Pre-Running as the nominee for Democrats, so I’ll be awaiting another book.

A pretty basic political book. There’s nothing particularly wrong with it, but I think VP Harris’ Wikipedia page could tell you most of the information contained within these pages. This is not a slight against her, just a slight against the book.

This was a pretty good one! Definitely heavy on the politics and issues in the second half which was a bit too much for me first thing in the morning while driving 😅 but I thought it was a good mix of heart, history, and reflection on the issues.

  • Long read (10+ hours)
  • The book began to lose me because, with success, she blended in with other politicians.
  • I liked the organization of the book and how empirics and stories were intertwined.

It was quite an insightful book into how Kamala Harris was shaped into the woman she is today and how she thinks. It's as though we actually know her from how her personality is on the pages. It is an alright book, an interesting memoir, that I can relax to and wind down with, but it doesn't stand out to me too much though (a personal thought mind you. This memoir might stand out more to you than it did for me). There some things I quite enjoyed reading of like her early days as a lawyer and some cases she worked on along with her role in the US' political world and her role as a Senator, and as a politician herself. Ending is especially powerful.
