The spread on page 252 and 253 made me cry. It's really heartbreaking how crappy the reactions are to her coming out from the rest of her family and friends. But thank god for the cello teacher for actually caring.

I didn't really know what I was getting into when I picked this up. I expected it to focus more on the skating and the competitions, more like sports anime like Haikyuu! etc.... instead it's a graphic memoir more like Persepolis or Fun Home. Similar to Fun Home, it's really not a happy story exactly. It left me just sorry that the author couldn't leave skating sooner, or that it wasn't really more fulfilling for her. It's also a relevant title in connection with the #MeToo movement.

Spinning is a memoir of a young girl's journey through adolescence, leaving childhood behind, and coming out of the closet. She also does a LOT of figure skating, both as an individual and as a member on a synchronized team. She spent over ten years skating, getting up crazy early in the morning to go practice, and then more practice after school. And if that wasn't enough, she also does Cello, is an artist, and is studying to take the SAT test early.
With all of that, the title for this book is perfect. I really liked how the author was able to describe her life and explain skating terms that I would have had no idea of otherwise. This is a graphic memoir; it's in comic book format. Because of that, I was able to read this in just a few hours.
