I’m afraid I’ll spend the rest of my life looking for another book like this but will never find one.

I loved how flawed every character is and how they’re all so obviously a product of their surroundings. O couldn’t help but sympathize with them, even when their actions were wrong. I also appreciated some general comments on the society at the time, influernced by the wars. A very touching read, but soooo worth it.

The novel is written in cold and emotionless way of Stoner's upbringing. Novel's initial few pages are like a black and white introduction of his life . Nothing exciting. But it reminds me of few lines at starting of novel which comments on reader that reader considers Stoner's life as boring but their own life is like same as of Stoner's .

His life had only few happy moments. The time spent with two other friends (Finch and Masters) at bar, the courtship period with Edith , spending time with daughter Grace (when Edith was away when her father died), and his teaching career . His little love affair with Driscoll was surely a honeymoon period for him

Stoner talked about professor. Apologies in advance to Professors, but I think his view was correct. The professors get a safe haven in colleges/universities from outside brutalities. I also once thought of becoming professor to avoid evils of world.

Days leading to marriage was beautifully described. His adventures during courtship period although becoming awkward at few times, are interesting. Sure any normal boy would act like him when he saw Edith in Hall. He tried his best to get her attention and her. Same happens in real life also. Many of my friends acted like same. They approached to some other friend to inquire about the girl and how to approach her. His meeting with Edith's parents was hilarious. There is such tense situation when there is love marriage and when boy/girl meets the other's parents. His honeymoon was disappointing.

In my opinion his marriage life failed due to Edith. She was self-centered. Her act of cleaning and doing all household work when Stoner is at college , tires her to level that when Stoner returns, She is not in capacity to talk to him. She returns to her room. This was her fault. At organizing parties, She would work so much that as soon as guests left, she retires to her bed . Her mystical illness was making matter worse. She took up strange hobbies and vitiated the peace of house. her behavior when she wanted a child, was not less than any lunatic . She was changing the world of Stoner. When she changed the study room of Stoner, I became emotional. In later phase of life , she drew herself to self. She had completely ignored the presence of Stoner in home. But when Stoner was counting his last days, she became the wife again (earlier she was just a copartner of same home)

Her behavior toward Grace was little odd. Stoner and Grace had developed a world of their own when Edith was away without any care for her husband and daughter. She would control Grace and try to separate her from Stoner. She did not foresee what she was doing when she was trying to make Grace "popular". It all ended with Grace becoming pregnant .

Stoner never let problems at home affect him. He used these circumstances to his favor. He wrote book, excelled in teaching , developed a reputation among his students. Despite not finding love in his love marriage with Edith, he never showed any depression or any impulsive behavior.

Few instances where Stoner displayed courage and stand was worth surprising. I thought he will argue and accept the Walker's argument . But he remained on his stand and even continued it during Walker's interview. I was surprised when he outsmart Lomax and retook his courses back.

First time Stoner faced consequence of his own action. Earlier it was his sad destiny but he faced consequence first time due to his own action. His action against Walker was taken in wrong way by his arch enemy Lomax .

Stoner's approach to Driscoll was typical of any new lover. Just like lovers try to find out even any remote silly reasons to approach their lover/crush, Stoner was also acting in same manner. When they both started their relationship, their behavior was like typical love affairs. Driscoll's act of leaving ring in hotel room was emotional and lovely. They both were satisfied with their new life. But at last they departed. Their departure was touchy. How they both knew that it is going to be last time together. Next day , Driscoll left. Many years later when Stoner read about Driscoll, his life became rosy again though for few moments only. It was sad because he knew that somewhere there is an another person whom we love but we can't meet.

Having tumor was last thing that I wished for Stoner. Nothing was left for him. Poor family , failure in marriage, troubles in professional life, Daughter's problems etc. and now this tumor and incoming death. The death is very well explained. I think person goes through this psychology when he/her is at death bed. The novel started emotionless way but ended beautifully with lots of emotions.

I started relating his life with me. Especially his loneliness with me. How I wasted time away alone with no friends at home. it raises lots of questions His failure in marriage still has created a fear in me. I always fear whether I will also end in marriage like this. whether i will also die with lots of unfulfilled dreams?

The novel is like checklist for our life. we should use it to check where is our life heading.
