I never read this in school (I went to a private school on scholarship so of course they wouldn't make us read it) but in a way I'm glad I hadn't because I doubt I would've appreciated it then. I loved the prose and the voice, there is a level of "unrealness" to it, especially in the more action-driven parts of the story, which I felt really enhanced its themes and what it was trying to say, although it did make it a bit difficult to know what was going on.

"I hope she'll be a fool– that's the best thing a girl can be in this world, a beautiful little fool."
"No amount of fire or freshness can challenge what a man can store up in his ghostly heart."
"I was within and without simultaneously enchanted and repelled by the inexhaustible variety of life."
Give me a book with beautiful writing and I will gobble it up. Maybe if I hadn't watched the movie earlier and didn't know the story it would have been a five star.
Also this book is extremely racist.

Boy, what a journey! I never read this book even though I’ve heard a lot about it. I never thought the story would end like this and I’m quite shocked. Not sure if I loved this book, but it was really great to read.
Don’t hesitate to read it y’all!

Wasn't sure what I was expecting going into this book but I found it to be fascinating, especially since it's a look into the past reading it almost a hundred years after its publishing.

I found the writing quite beautiful when Nick was reflecting.

It should be noted that there are some views expressed by characters and language that is very dated.

This book would’ve been decent if it weren’t for the constant racial slurs and sexist comments. It was only actually during the last three chapters that anything remotely interesting happened and the rest of the book was just an excuse to be racist. Even during the last three chapters, I’d be really into it and then he’d say something so unbelievably offensive that I had to put the book down and rage inwardly at the book until I could bare to pick it back up. If it weren’t for the constant racism and sexism it probably would’ve been 3 stars - even then that’s not even that good. Overall, I have no idea how this is considered a must read classic when the book mainly consists of massively offensive quotes and ideals.
