Wallander is ook gewoon maar een man. Soms wel gedateerd taalgebruik en choquerende situaties, vooral wat vluchtelingen betreft. Veel minder detective-achtig en heel erg politie, als je begrijpt wat ik bedoel.

So, does this series get any better?
I'm fairly giving it a 2.5 stars - as the suspense did have its merits. However the prose was boring, flat and did nothing to interest me. I have a "will-finish-the-book-no-matter-what" policy, and hence, I trudged along till the end. The characters were dull, Wallander being so meh. I'm sure the character develops more as the series progresses, but, well, this book, failed to make me like Kurt Wallander at all. He wasn't even a good investigator. Most of the breakthroughs in the search for the murderers were due to sheer dumb luck. Maybe, [a:Henning Mankell|22339|Henning Mankell|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1336761478p2/22339.jpg] wanted to delve into the political scenario, and he really did want to shed light on the real policemen, and not amazing Batman-ish people who single-handedly solve the entire crime, but seriously, I felt Wallander contributing little, other than endlessly thinking about his bad diet. This was just a murder mystery, with no psychological twist in it.
Not really sure if I'll be picking up any other of the Wallander stories.

Slowly paced but a solid if simple plot.

I loved this! It was paced well and kept my attention. Chapters were a little too long for my liking.

This book was painfully slow. It was painfully slow until the very very end and then it felt like the author knew he had to end it soon so he just threw a crap ending together similar to the way a procrastinator writes a 10 page paper 2 hours before it’s due.

I enjoyed some of the characters and it had potential to be so good as a true crime/detective book but it definitely missed the mark by a landslide.
