I generally avoid World War II books because of the generational anxiety passed down to me from my grandfather, who survived the holocaust. My Jewish family lives with the remnants of the past, and as an empath, it's too much to face and close to home.
Now, The Nightingale was an exception because of my love for Kristin Hannah and multiple recommendations from friends. I cried many times throughout the book because I know the stories of those who survived and those tortured and murdered. For many who will read this book, who may not know much about the Holocaust, it’s important to remember that while this story is fictional, the experiences described throughout are just a small example of the human's ability to commit unbelievable atrocities and the capacity of love.

Dieses Buch hatte ich mehr oder weniger außversehen angefragt. Als in den Titel und das Cover sah, hatte irgendwie direkt Assoziationen zu dem Klassiker wer die Nachtigall stört. Aber vom Inthalt her unterscheiden sich diese beiden Bücher doch sehr. Auch wenn wer die Nachtigall stört nie bei mir im Regal stand, verlieh mir diese Annahme hohe Erwartungen die leider enttäuscht wurden.
Der zweite Weltkrieg ist ein Thema das man in der Schule hoch und runter behandelt hat, aus diesem Grund hatte ich noch wieder den Elan mich nit dem Thema auseinander zusetzen.
trotz allem lies sich Hannah Kristins Schreibstil gut lesen und wenn man sich für die Geschichte Zeit genommen hat kam man gut rein. Es ist immer sehr interessant unterschiedliche Sichtweisen des Krieges geschildert zu bekommen. Hier hat Hannah Kristin gelungen zu zeigen, wie sich die deutsche Besatzungszeit auf Frankreich auf frankreich ausgewirkt hat das war auch ab einem gewissen Punkt zu lesen. Doch für mich kam dieser Punkt zu spät.
Dadurch das Kristin Hannah in der dritten Person Singular geschrieben hat aber iher gesichte aus der Sicht von drei verschiedenen Frauen erzählen lässt hatte große Probleme mich in der Gesichte einzufinden. Mal hat Sophie mal Vivianna und mal die dritte erzählt. Diese Wechsel haben mir nicht dabei geholfen mich zu orientieren.
Ebenfalls ist es mir nicht wirklich gelungen die einzelnen Gefühlswelten der fraun und Intensität der Gefühle in diesem Buch im allgemeinen haben mich nicht erreicht.
Trotz eines flüssigen Schreibstils war die Gesichte sehr zäh für mich und ich hatte immer das Gefühl weiterlesen zu müssen.
Zu dem viel es mir schwer mich mit den Charakteren zu identifizieren.
Die junge Isabell lässt jedes Risioko außer acht und kämpft für ihr Land. Dafür kann man sie bewundern. Ich finde jedoch war sie auch immer wieder sehr reizbar und hat Dinge getan die ich nicht so Gut nachvolziehen konnte.
Auch Vivianne muss man es hoch anrechnen, das das tut von dem sie glaubt es sei das richtige für ihre Familie. Aber leider war konnte ich sie nicht ganz greifen.
Alles in allem ein ganz guter Versuch ein komplexes Problem und seine Folgen zu schildern. Der aber leider einige Schwächen hatte, die zu drei Sternen für dieses Buch führen

If I could give this book more than 5 stars, I would. This book is a masterpiece. I could barely put it down. It's SO emotional and heavy but it is beautifully written. It was really hard to read about what life was like in Nazi-occupied France during WWII and it will certainly be with me for a long time. I was in tears through the last 100-150 pages.
Be warned - there are a lot of very heavy and difficult parts in this book. If you are concerned about that, please read the trigger warnings before you pick this book up. 4.5 stars, ONLY because it took me a long time to get into it, and keep up with it. But this story had me feeling so many different emotions. I loved the ending so much. This will be a book I’ll never forget.
