Reread update on 6/4/2020:

Bumped up from 3 to 4

Okay, that make up scene straight up brought tears to me eyes. Even though this is far from a healthy relationship at the moment, I'm definitely rooting for them to get together. I think both of them can help the other grow and I really want to see that growth! I'm also proud of Hime being honest with herself and showing some serious character growth by wanting to help Yano despite their relationship just being "part of the job". I want to note, though, that despite Hime's selfishness and facade, she isn't heartless. She does genuinely care about others, she's just not good at communicating and it causes more harm than good. Anyway, I loved this volume and am loving this series more on reread!

Original review posted 4/11/19:

This volume is a good follow-up to volume one. The backstory explaining Yano and Hime's previous friendship is interesting and explains Yano's conflicting emotions toward Hime. Hime is kind of annoying because she believes Yano is the only one out of the two who betrayed anyone, but I also like her behavior because it fits with her character. She can't or won't take responsibility for her actions and because people have spoiled her in the past she doesn't think she has to. For her to look back at her fallout with Yano and believe that Yano betrayed her and not the other way around makes sense, and explains why she won't take responsibility for her role in the fallout. While it is true that Yano did not hear all of Hime's conversation, causing the fallout, Hime was not in the right either by constantly lying to her classmates to spend time with Yano. Even though she had good intentions behind her actions, Yano felt betrayed and was in the right to feel that way.

That aside, them making up in the middle is heartwarming, especially when Hime makes it a point to fix the mess they were in. It showed some growth on her part and put Yano in a differently light, which is welcome. I am curious to see where their relationship goes and what new developments will occur. The release date for volume three has been pushed back, but I think I can tide myself over by rereading volumes one and two for now.

This is better than the last but still rather confusing. You're supposed to pick up on certain things that the font is doing to figure out whether what's being said is past or present, but I still find myself having to read things a couple of times to figure it out. "Fantasy" is a little easier to make out but not always. The MC is more redeeming here as well. There's less emphasis on her wanting to be some ridiculous popularity-contest-winner (a.k.a. finding a rich husband) and more on her relationship with Yano.

I'm starting to get curious as to why this is LGBTQ+ though. Frankly, with one exception, everyone is just friendly or sisterly. There's nothing particularly romantic about most of the interactions... I suppose you could read into things but I'm not convinced. It's still a good story, just a little misleading (and yes, I understand that the genre "shoujo-ai" is not always romantic).

I thought I’ll give this series one more chance, as I’ve heard that there was the backstory here and I was kinda curious on how they met.
I really must say, I love young Yano! She’s the best.
Hime isn’t any different from her present-self – just as annoying and fake as ever. And that victim trope is making me throw up.

Can’t believe Yano is always made as the villain by everyone, even though Hime is the jerk.
