Having gone into a deep book hangover after finishing Clive Barker's Weaveworld I decided that the only cure had to be a bit more of the same. And it worked a treat.

This isn't Barker's best book, not by a country mile but its entertaining and well written. It dose though have a couple of flaws for me,

1. At times D'Amour felt too much of a Constantine clone,
2. Pinhead and the cenobites were stripped of their mystique and somehow lessened.

Other than those to quibbles, thoroughly enjoyable.

Spoiler”Demons to some, angels to others” isn’t true anymore, the Priest (“Pinhead”) is just straight up looking to take over the world and hell itself. The random mentions and descriptions of various creatures’ genitals just felt out of place and in most cases entirely irrelevant to the scene. Barker’s worldbuilding is still top notch, thankfully, and the main characters are well written and fleshed out (pun intended). I guess I just expected more ambiguity regarding the Priest

Took a little bit to get going and extremely graphic, but then that's why I love Clive Barker.

Dragged on a little, but there’s maybe something to be said about
Spoilerdestiny and/or futility

Still, despite being a heavy read at times, I enjoyed it. Harry D’Amour remains a delight.

Really 2.5 stars. It’s fine. There are some sections I really like (the beginning is great) but parts of this DRAG. Without spoiling anything there’s a section in the middle to near the end that goes on forever yet feels like it was put together piece meal with over descriptions and weird tonal shifts. Lots of good ideas here and always fun seeing Cenobites, but I think there are too many ideas being cobbled together that doesn’t necessarily make a great whole.

An epic fantasy/horror, pitting Barker's already established characters (Pinhead vs. Harry D'Amour) against each other. The supporting cast is interesting, but, unfortunately, we don't learn much about them. There's lots of gore and brutality (occasionally creative, mostly just repetitive), way too many action scenes. The descriptions of otherworldly landscapes and architecture are awesome.

I'm not sure what I was expecting but it wasn't this. That's not to way that I didn't enjoy it but it seemed very different from the tone and world of the original novella. Plenty of grotesque beauty & a killer opening.
