I tried the book because I’m a fan of Julia Wehlan as an audiobook reader. It was really fun to have a protagonist who was a romance-hating narrator who finds herself living a romance novel reality. In the midst of this self-aware winking to the listener, she created some very moving scenes with her aunt who was losing herself in dementia. A surprisingly good book!

I laughed out loud several times at the charming dialogue, and overall very much enjoyed this story that manages to be ultra romantic while also being super meta about being a romance.

What was meant to be a fun, unserious rom-com turned out to be a fun, unserious rom-com. audiobooked this one, which made listening to a cynical audiobook narrator all the more fun—plus, Whelan’s narration of the characters was quite enjoyable! I love when an author narrates their own work.

After an accident that forced Sewanee to stop acting, she did the next best thing: audiobook narration. What she didn’t love was narrating romance, because Happily Ever After™️ doesn’t actually exist. But when the circumstances are right, aka she’s the only one a late author requests (and the check is big enough), she dips her toes back into the genre. And from there, it’s history.

This book has witty writing, quirky humor, a sexy Irishman, a great dip recipe, and lovable side stories. What more can you ask for in a rom-com?

Julia Whelan knows how to write romance! She’s a renowned audiobook narrator, so when I heard she’d written a rom com about two romance audiobook narrators narrating the same book falling in love, I checked it out right away. It was fun and intense and had beautiful character development and a fully-realized heroine. I recommend it to romance fans and also fans of women’s fiction. Note: listen to the audiobook if you can!!! The author narrates it.

Content warnings: Alzheimer’s, ableism, traumatic accident.

Listen to this as an audiobook immediately. This story made me feel all the feelings, it made me sad and extremely happy. Even the side storylines were so developed and meaningful.

In a book about audiobook narrators, what killed this book was the audiobook narrator. The Irish make lead felt like a caricature, the black female main characters were very obviously voiced by a white woman, and the whole thing threw me off. Maybe I'll read a physical copy of this one day.

Edit: I worked through it and once you get over the voice, I'd say it's a fun romance. It has one of the most realistic dialogues I've listened to, and it doesn't fall into the miscommunication trope any more than it needs to. Worth the read, but probably try the book first.
