This series is quickly becoming a favorite of mine. I loved this book just as much as the last one, if not more. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. If it weren't for my classes, I probably would've finished this in one sitting. Kagawa's writing is vivid and immersive, almost as if I was there with the characters watching everything unfold before my eyes and I couldn't look away no matter how hard I tried. From the first to the last chapter, I was completely hooked.

The story started out a bit slow, but the characters more than made up for it. They complement each other so well that I honestly can't imagine the story with one of them missing. Although they were brought together by circumstance, they seem like they've known each other their whole lives, what with their easy chemistry and witty banter and unwavering loyalty. I've grown to love this bunch of random misfits, even more so now that I finished the Soul of the Sword. I'm not sure what's going to happen to them in the next book, but my god, I just want all of them to be happy. I don't think my heart can take it if they weren't.

Reread (July 13, 2022): Wow. That ending though. I still don't know what this is building up to, but I have a feeling the finale's gonna be an emotional rollercoaster. Not sure I'm mentally prepared for that, but here goes nothing...

I found this a little slow to start of and I was worried this would suffer from middle book syndrome where it's necessary for the plot but not necessarily the most interesting but about a third of the way in it picked up dramatically and I loved it. I think mostly I just prefered Yumeko's perspective over the others and it became more prominent as the book proceeded.

I loved how the other characters developed. I just was totally in love with them all by the end. I'm super excited to read the last book.

4.5. For the most part, this was a fantastic instalment in the Shadow of the Fox trilogy - it's ending sequence in particular was phenomenal and a huge step-up from the first book. Also, Kagawa writes really good romances, ESPECIALLY pining, which I LOVE. However, at first I really wasn't enjoying it, and I think that was because
in the beginning so much of the story was told from Hakaimono's perspective. I simply wasn't interested in him, and thought his POV should have been told in Tastumi's voice, or at least there should have been less chapters from him. Also, I lost a lot of respect for Yumeko in the end for making the incredibly selfish decision to give the scroll to Genno. I also felt like it was lazy writing for Genno to be able to come into command of all three pieces of the scroll, when this could have been engineered in some other way to avoid Yumeko having to make a selfish and illogical decision.
Despite this, I am definitely looking forward to reading Night of the Dragon!
