I keep thinking that this series is going to find its footing, but it just hasn't yet for me. There's a lot of focus on minor inconveniences and misunderstandings facing the main characters, and while that can be a narrative device that adds excitement and keeps the writing fresh, it's instead coming at the expense of the larger overall story, which feels thrown in at the end of this book especially.
On top of that, to be completely honest, I just don't really like the main characters, so my motivation to continue engaging with their story is low, reliant only on wanting to know the whole picture and not on the desire to actually learn more about them.

The tone shifts again with this one to be more of a light mystery, while also providing a school setting that feels familiar in the YA genre. Some of the coherence as a story gets sacrificed to set up the finale, but it still manages to explore some interesting themes of will and compassion.

does this instalment suffer from the previous pattern of overlapping fakeout plot twists? yes. is the pacing slightly strange in places, especially towards the end? very much so. is it still a stunningly crafted story which honestly and lovingly handles incredibly challenging themes in ways accessible and enlightening to every age? ab-so-lutely.

My favorite Wingfeather book yet! Full of adventure and exploring the depths of the characters as we prepare for the final installment. Loved this book, very emotional and beautifully written.

A great story. I couldn’t put it down. Peterson has crafted that rarest of all things in these literary dark ages - a children’s story for every age.
