This book was spookily awesome! Great descriptions (especially of the creatures mentioned), good characters and awesome plot line.

I think what I liked best and found very interesting is that it's very original. It's something I haven't read before. And to be honest I like to read things more that are different, not always the same thing.

Can't say enough how much I liked this one.

I liked this first book. I heard that the author passed away this last August. I discovered that he wrote this series which inspired the movie "Seventh Son". The book was a spooky adventure with smart young characters that I want to follow their stories. I had a nice time reading this first book.

I read this for part of my book club with my best friends. This has been one of my friends’ fave books for years and we recently went on a holiday trip to Lancashire and she created a witchy murder mystery game based on these books. It was so much fun that we all agreed our next book had to be Spooks.

And this book did not disappoint! It’s written for younger readers, some of the writing was quite juvenile and sometimes I felt like the action was resolved and skipped over too suddenly - but it didn’t detract from how creepy and easy to read this is!
I love all things horror and creepy, and this book is full of witches and boggarts and ghosts/ghasts - it’s creepy and would be disturbing for younger audiences; some of the descriptions I was surprised they didn’t edit down!
I am very invested in this world, I need to know more about the Spook and Tom’s Mam and Alice, and all of the other beings causing problems!
Luckily I also have book 2 to read now, so I’m off to do that!

This is fantastic! Definitely meant for a young audience however the writing style is very creepy at times and your mind can fill in plenty of extra details as you're reading. Definitely intend to read the entire series.

I remember my dad reading this book to me as a child, and being really into it. Recently I found the audiobook available through my library and it really improved my hours-long train ride today!

The premise is that a “spook”, who is shunned by society but solves problems with the supernatural, takes on the main character as his new apprentice. Conceptually it reminded me of the Witcher and of Lockwood and Co — two other series I enjoy!

It seemed quite brief from the listen through, but there are more books in the series I hope to get around to sometime.
