This book was a bit of a disappointment. It is primarily setting up the mystery for the rest of the series. I did not really feel much suspense. Because there isn't much of a mystery yet, the book relies on the histories of the girls to sustain interest. I just am not able to feel much of a connection to a Sara Shepard character. I just do not feel very sympathetic toward any of them, because she describes all of their emotions in such a matter-of-fact way. My main issue was that I really wanted to see it hit the fan, but all the fall-out and consequences are left for the following entries in the series. This book just doesn't have any major pay off. I just expect a little more scandal in my trashy teen books.

This is a reread from before 2016

Honest to god, I started this audiobook because I'm knitting a bra and one of the characters knits the girls bras. This is during the 2020 pandemic and I haven't been reading much (or at all) so I decided to go with any reading urge I got.

This is a really enjoyable story and I live for the drama. I read about half the series years ago and I only kept the first four books because I liked the first A the best. Also everything that happens during this initial arc doesn't feel super dramatic or over the top just yet. Later on it feels ridiculous and redundant

Pretty Little Liars was recommended to me by a friend and I'm so glad I read it! It sucks you into to the upper-class world of American high school, with great contrasting characters and a million secrets that keep you guessing. I would definitely recommend it and I'll certainly be looking out for the next in the series.

I have to admit I got hooked on the TV show way before I read this first book. And it might have been a mistake, because I kept searching for the characters I know so well. And they weren't there. None of them were like the TV show, they seemed so different. Even the girls, they are like their darker shadows.
But once I could put up with this, I started enjoying the book and it was pretty quick to read. I've been reading only while commuting and hasn't lasted very long. It's fast paced and easy to read. Like a candy Hanna would sneak into her mouth.
Anyway, the book tells the story of a clique of friends who grow apart once the queen bee goes missing. The book starts three years after the girl has disappeared and for the most part of this book the girls are alone. Each chapter is devoted to one of them and they seem to never grow close, until the last moment.
I am willing to see if they get to be friends again after this first introductory book.
