"Had she really thought I would not know him? I could recognize him by touch alone, by smell; I would know him blind, by the way his breaths came and his feet struck the earth. I would know him in death, at the end of the world.
"He is half of my soul, as the poets say"
As a queer person obsessed with Greek mythology, I knew I would enjoy this book, and I freakin did. My expectations were high, and thankfully, I wasn't disappointed.
The enthralling love story of Patroclus and Achilles had me in tears. It was beautifully tragic and written so faithfully that we came to understand Achilles' rage which drove him to end the nine-year siege mentioned in Homer's Iliad. It was heartbreaking even though I knew how it would end.
This book is definitely a masterpiece thanks to Miller's poetic ruthlessness. Lyrical and heartfelt, like the kind you'd feel after listening to a sad song over and over in your dark room. You know it's going to hurt and make you vulnerable, but the pain you felt somehow gives you comfort. I can't wait to devour this book and bleed once more.
