Going into this book I worried that I wouldn’t fully enjoy the story’s twist and turns since I have previously read The Iliad. However despite my prior reading, this novel still managed to suck me in and keep me guessing. The writing is so beautifully done and seamless, that it made the story feel authentic. Madeline Miller has done something that not many authors can do; create a riveting story for readers who may already know the ending. I would even say that knowing the ending beforehand made me more emotional and invested. There were so many scenes that foreshadowed our characters fates, that felt more heavy with the knowing of what’s to come, and what our characters are blind to. Miller does a great service to her readers by creating a novel that all can enjoy despite their knowledge or lack thereof, of The Iliad.

Oh my heart! Miller has fashioned legend into a love story for the ages. Superb writing, rich in character, heartbrakingly beautiful. I have not ached so much for a character in a very long time.

For someone who knows nothing and I mean nothing about Greek Gods or mythology, it was a good book! I think if I had a prior knowledge and love of the characters and the culture surrounding, I’d give it a fat 5 stars. Easy enough to follow but I did find myself googling names, pronunciations, and locations. So I do recommend this books to folks with the caveat that some things may be harder to follow without prior knowledge.

"in the darkness, two shadows, reaching through the hopeless, heavy dusk. their hands meet, and light spills in a flood, like a hundred golden urns pouring out the sun"
what can I say? I loved this book. It took me a while, I've been very busy these days, but it took my heart and crushed it under its fist. I was already familiar with the story of Patroclus and Achilles (having studied the Illyad in school), so it was a new form of "reading a story I already know", 'cause I learned so much I didn't know but being at the same time brought back to a world I am acquainted with.
It was a pleasure to explore their relationship and their endless love.
Needless to say, the writing was impeccable. It was a bliss to read. So glad I actually did it.

I am glad that in the end, they were given eternity. It was something that I had always missed. And even if the end was positive, Patroclus and Thetis sharing their memories and their pain, and her finally acknowledging their love and allowing them to be together. POETRY.Needless to say, the writing was impeccable. It was a bliss to read. So glad I actually did it.
