While I enjoy Chainsaw Man and Jujutsu Kaisen (via the anime mostly), I never have the third title of the “shonen dark trio” a look, that being Hell's Paradise: Jigokuraku. Until today, that is.

Hell's Paradise: Jigokuraku revolves around Gabimaru the Hollow, a dangerous assassin who has been sentenced to death. When he refuses to die, Asaemon the Decapitator, has a request: join an expedition to an island in search of the elixir of life…

While the premise is very different from both Chainsaw Man and Jujutsu Kaisen, Hell's Paradise: Jigokuraku has a very similar style, being darker and gorier than most modern shonen, bordering on seinen at times. Sorry if this sounds confusing. The story seems to be scarily similar to Blade of the Immortal, but it diverges latter on. The art is also really good and somewhat sketchy, which is always good news for me.

After diverging from familiar territory, Hell's Paradise: Jigokuraku becomes very interesting and I can’t wait to see where Yuji Kaku takes us.

01/05/23 Update: While I did read volume 2, due to how strange this series is to describe, I won’t be writing reviews for volumes 2-12. I will be writing a volume 13 review when I get there, however.

Kinda gore-heavy but with the intriguing setting, so far, well written characters, and SUSPENSE? What more can you want? Can't wait to continue reading this series!
