Haven’t read something like this in a while, a deep dive on the complex dynamics between characters. We read as the characters grow up, and how their relationships evolve. Most of the characters are deeply flawed, but I think that was the point. The author’s obviously passionate about games and worldbuilding, and it was fun to dive into this even as someone who doesn’t play games. Heartbreaking but hopeful and resonant, this book’s has a thoughtful take on life, baggage, and why we play games.

such a fun read even if you aren't well-versed in video games as I am! you can tell the research and passion the author put into the book, and how she incorporated elements of her identity and upbringing into the characters. it's such a unique book with unique cultural crossovers and a cast with variegated interests. i think if you're from the cultures--whether that be ethnicity, video game, or if you're from LA/Boston, etc--you'll appreciate the attention to detail and references. i think sometimes it can feel a little long and you're wondering where the book is going, but i like the third party perspective (and how that can change in important moments hint hint). just a wholesome but hearty book about friendship, growing up, love, disability, and family (outside the nuclear sense of it). a great book to get me out of a reading slump!

Beautiful: creativity as an attempt to communicate what seems impossible to say, and how it can both fall short and also precipitate incredible intimacy.

Honestly this book really dragged for me. I'm not a huge gamer but still. The only thing that kept me going was the literary reference and concepts. The parallels, metaphors, and symbolism was very pleasing. I also really liked the representation throughout the book

I just really, really loved this - even though the characters were often problematic and flawed, they were still so appealing and the flaws so sympathetic, and their relationships felt beautiful and real. I also just thought the author's writing style, incorporating different viewpoints and also video game styling, was really brilliant. I didn't want it to end.
