So important to hear her testimony. Much love for Britney from a fellow Survivor-To-Thriver.

I listened to the audiobook and Michelle Williams did not disappoint.

It makes me sad to read about everything that Britney has been through in her life, especially at the hands of people who were supposed to love and care for her.

Despite the book not being as detailed as it could have been, it was more than enough to show and explain not only everything Britney went through, but how it has impacted her and will continue to affect her.

This book does read almost like a teenage diary, but that is not surprising considering most of the control of her own life started to disappear when she was a teenager. So many opportunities and life experiences were taken away from her and it has definitely left its impact.

oh i am fearful for people to see this.
im going to be honest - i haven't read too many celebrity memoirs, but this.... was the worst ive read.
now, i will say, i am a britney stan until i DIE. she is an icon, a legend, and she is the moment. i was in the trenches during her conservatorship, and i wish her nothing but peace for the rest of her life.
however, this was incredibly surface-level.
now, i understand this is her book!!! she can choose how much she wants to spill!! and truly she did spill at some parts. but if you don't want to reveal a lot, why write a memoir.....
i understand how her life has been traumatic & understand how dredging up those feelings and memories may have been too painful for her. but in that case, why write a memoir about it?? i also know she wants to raise awareness on conservatorship but girlie i promise you did not have to write a memoir to achieve that.
i also would like to say the writing is incredibly..... lacklustre. i know she said she's been robbed of her childhood & womanhood..... and i can tell. the writing is incredibly juvenile and lacks depth. like when she'll describe an event, she'll go "i loved that. it was great". like my last celebrity memoir was im glad my mom died so my expectations for a celebrity memoir are incredibly high. idk i felt disappointed. it also felt like the same points were just being reiterated regarding certain events over and over again, and then other events were barely even discussed.
however, this was incredibly addictive to read, and allowed me a new insight into mother herself. i hope she is living her best life, because god knows she fucking deserves it. queen shit.

Kudos to the ghost writer and Michelle Williams for capturing Britney so well. It does feel like something she would write: not completely mature-sounding but when your childhood is stripped from you, you naturally want to have that childhood back as an adult. It makes sense.

I was not fond of a few comments Britney Spears (or her ghostwriter) made in regards to the fellow attendees of several of the groups and institutions she was forced to attend. It is reasonable to harbor a grudge against those groups, institutions, and her family. It is not really reasonable to write about the other attendees like they were all dangerous animals. However this does encapsulate the fear she talks about having during this time and maybe she meant to show the reader and listener that fear with those comments.
Michelle Williams does a fantastic job showing the dry wit in the narritive as well as the turbulent emotions. The introduction being read by Britney herself was a very special touch. Fans of Britney throughout her career will be very engaged with this and also horrified. The casual reader may not feel quite so fondly and want to hold their judgment but they will still have an engaging read.

Of course this is not going to be a literary memoir, and of course she had help writing it, but that's not the point. I'm glad she finally got to say exactly what she wanted to say, on her terms. She rightly points out that her "wild" stage was a result of rebelling against expectations — much like many people in their 20s who grew up in a controlling, abusive environment — and also because of how much she suffered from anxiety and postpartum depression. It's sad when one of the only people asking during that time, "Hey, are you all right?" is one of the paparazzi who was paid to follow her. All these ain't-shit men taking advantage of her from every angle — man, you'd be crazy too.

Anyway, I hope she is able to be healthy and happy. If she wants to retire from performing, let her.

Sped through this like my life depended on it 😅 This is the fourth memoir I've read this year (and probably the last one of the year). After reading this, I'm convinced that memoirs aren't just a way to capture stories of people's lives but a platform for people to regain their voices.

13 years under strict conservatorship is... Mind boggling. I can't comprehend it. Here we are thinking the celebrities we idolise lead fabulous lives but they actually are very trapped.

There's a lot more left unsaid in between the chapters and we'll never know the full story of how the conservatorship unravelled, most likely for legal reasons, because it's kept quite one sided and the details are murky. However I'm glad that Britney found her voice and found the courage to fight and live.
