Re-reading
I'd forgotten just how enjoyable this particular volume of the Xanth "trilogy" is. A quest, time travel, new and old characters...simply wonderful! This book revolves mostly around Dor, the son of Bink and Chameleon, who is a Magician in his own right. He is sent on a quest to restore the Zombie Jonathan. I particularly liked the introspection as 12yo Dor inhabits the body of a grown Mundane, and comes to realize that he has much to learn.

Still not as good as when I read the series when I was 10.

I liked this book. It was a little hard to get into at first. It is all about Dor quest to becoming a man. He learns what it takes to be a man. I liked how the book dealt difference between the different species. I also liked how the romance played out.

So, the third book of the Xanth series (so far) I've liked the best. The plot line was interesting, the characters likable (I rather dislike Bink of the first two books). Most appealing of the character list to me seemed Jumper the Spider of unusual proportions.

I do have problems at times with the way the author illustrates women in his world of Xanth. Millie the Ghost was annoying in her role of parody damsel in distress. (but noes, Xanth is not sexist at all)

Also, I'm unsure about the target audience.
There is sex and gore, mostly covered with more or less crafty word-play. Still, the trees have candy in them, there are marshmallow bushes and cola trees among other highly silly fairy tale exaggerations. Confusing.

Never really did laugh out loud reading any of the Xanth books. A smile here and there is all. Then again, perhaps it's my own invalid sense of humour that disables me to actually enjoy supposedly funny stuff.

The plot didn't leave the impression of being sluggish. (The first two was like that, quest goes on and on, lotsa turns and interactions, complications, and whatnots) Everything did happen for a reason more or less, not just to fill in the blanks whilst moving from point A to B.

Overall, I liked it, but it was not awesome and I do not know whether I'll continue to read on the rest of the series' books.
