Absolutely the best. My teen son read it and also raved. One of the best things I can say about this book is that it wasn’t quite as expected and I plan to read the next offerings by this author!

Grim. Thoughtful. Spiritual even. A well constructed story with a compelling central character and fascinating surrounding cast. Post apocalyptic setting but much more about what we are willing to do to each other than any sort of environmental warning story. There is love in the mix, but also hate, disregard, ambition and violence by the bucket load.
Don’t pick this up expecting hi-tech multiverse world hopping adventures, though superficially it’s there, but definitely read if the human condition is more your thing.

This was a fantastic book!!! I was truly sucked in from the very beginning. The concept was so interesting and the world building was so immersive. I loved both books in this series and I can’t wait for more from this author!

Social science fiction akin to LeGuin in many ways. Really loved all the versions and people of Ashtown.

Very Very Very Good. 4.5 stars. For as long as I've understood the mulitverse theory, I've truly believed with everything in me that our dreams are glimpses into all the other versions of ourselves that exist in the multitude of other worlds in parallel to our own. Whilst this book isn't really that, it touches it lightly enough that I couldn't be more delighted. The concept of this story is beautiful, and it's quite well written. I dropped half a star because there are parts that are difficult to follow, not because it's complicated, simply because the cast is large and set across the worlds. It's difficult keeping up where you are who has what relationship with whom at times. It's still a really lovely read, though.

This was so good. Alternate universe travel from a gritty future earth full of inequality. It deals with power, privilege, home…and it really kept me guessing. There was reveal after reveal that I didn’t see coming, but which made complete sense. Our narrator Cara was complicated and engaging - kind of broken, rough around the edges, but with a clear moral center when push came to shove. The author showed us so much about the world(s) and Cara through her memories and analysis of the differences between the worlds. So well done - I can’t wait to read more by Johnson. I listened to the audiobook, and the narrator was superb - I thought she did very well with Cara’s nuance and complicated nature.
