bit too christian for my tastes, also suffering a liiittle bit from gender essentialism at times but very minor really. very very grounded take on merlin's magic which is pretty cool, but on the downside the man himself has a rather boring personality, i barely care about him. the back half focuses more on large-scale conflicts without much of a personal stake for merlin, which i wasn't very invested in; despite his blandness i am still more interested in him than in how precisely ambrosius conquered britain

Having read Bernard Cornwell's Arthur trilogy, this was a complete disappointment. It felt like a children's book.

I wanted to like this book, but I found it so dry and wooden in places I nearly gave up on it a couple of times. It's such a good story. I feel it deserved a better telling.
