Perfect ending to this delightful series. Generous epilogue as well which I especially adore when I am invested in the characters.

I started this series when I was like 15 and finished it five years later still enjoying it the way I did when I was 15. I love the story of Charlotte and Jamie and the way it progresses form book one to book four, all the changes they go through individually and together. This did feel like a conclusion to a book series but with enough open-endedness for the author to possibly write more books in this universe if she wishes to. For me, because of the nostalgia, I would have liked this book no matter what the plot was or the conclusion. Despite feeling very slow, I enjoyed the dynamic of Holmes and Watson. Though it was a lesser mystery than the previous ones, it did feel like we were closing up the story, both in the book and in Holmes's life, and I understand why. My only issue was with how some parts of Holmes's inner monologue felt repetitive, and I would have liked more in the epilogue. Other than that, I liked it very much and will always enjoy rereading this series.

happy new year.

what am i doing at new year's time with the final book of a series i have never read or heard about anyway?

the mystery was fine enough, though not as related to Sherlock Holmes as i initially expected.

the final chapter had me slightly shocked by the main character's decision, but again, i do not follow the series. what do i have to say about the decisions of people i barely know?

- is that, you are not the family you are born into, and you do not need to follow a conventional standard of success to be happy. and that, the person who loves you will wait on the pavement, will take exhausting train rides with unread textbooks, and will stay with you even if - even when - you have to run away and abandon everything you know to get to know yourself and heal.

happy new year.

Overall I loved this series but this was my least favorite. If it had ended after 3 books, it would’ve felt complete. This one kinda felt like it was trying too hard.

Also
Spoiler after rooting for them the whole time, I really wanted them to officially end up together and not have to hope that they’d have a romantic future. Watching them both make decisions for their future regardless of a relationship was nice but sad at the same time. I know they end up together, but when you’re that invested in a relationship, a celebration at the end would be nice.
Spoiler

Overall, great series!
