Check out my detailed review on my blog! https://navigatingneverland.org/2016/12/17/legend-legend-trilogy-1-by-marie-lu/

I have to admit the only dystopian novels I have read are The Hunger Games. I loved those a lot and didn’t think anything would ever be able to compete with them. Though Legend was a good read (towards the end) and a great Dystopian novel, it wasn’t as enjoyable for me as the aforementioned series. I think I will be hard pressed to find anything as interesting as The Hunger Games.

The plot was slow moving; mostly focused on character development, which isn’t a bad thing, per se. The characters were well-developed and interesting, though a bit too similar, and the world-building was decently done. I also enjoyed the writing.

I rated this three, but since I'm a very indecisive bean, this might change. Legend was a thrilling read for sure, one I would have read in a day or something if I had enough time to do so.
I really enjoyed the characters, their motives and everything else - it was a pretty kickass cast of characters, that's for sure. I enjoyed the world and its world-building, yet somehow... it ended too quickly? I think I would have liked it to be longer, to develop more, to stay more on the world and its complexities -could have used a map? I would have LOVED A MAP. The romance-side felt a little bit rushed as well.
THAT BEING SAID, it still was a very interesting first book and I will be reading the rest of the series for sure because I AM INTRIGUED.

4.5⭐️ wow, I didn’t expect to live this book so much! An intricate and well-thought out story with a adorable slow burn romance

The book is fast-paced and doesn’t waste any time getting to the best bits. It’s a super fun and exciting read. The downside of this is that some plot lines aren’t really built up to, they just… happen. For me, the romance feels out of place given the high level of drama and world-changing stakes, but I think that speaks more to my misplaced priorities than the book’s quality LOL.

I solved the crime in the first few chapters which means I’m probably a really great detective with a perfect score on my Trial and I can’t wait to be recruited by the Patriots and/or Republic, y’know, whichever.

EDIT: (content warning for c*vid)
I was marinating on what the themes of this book could be, and I realized C*vid has subconsciously colored my interpretation in many ways. Aspects such as the hacker boy claiming he discovered the “plague” is controlled by the government and intrigue relating to vaccines just read differently now, and I’m curious how my own reaction to this book would have been different if I’d read it prior to 2020.

My student recommended this book to me and I finished it in a day. A YA dystopian series, but with a fresh take. The romance isn’t over done.

Listen, I get that this is a really popular series, but I am struggling. I cannot find any hint or clue as to why this series is popular at all.

The two main characters? Boring and bland with zero personality to them. If it wasn't for the annoying font style changing between their chapters, you would not be able to tell them apart. Show some emotion! Show some depth! Stop talking about how awesome you are and/or how good looking you are but don't know it! How did anyone read an entire series centered around these two blocks of wood??

You're telling me, with a dystopian government where there's so much shit going on, that this one kid stealing medicine is the most wanted criminal in the place? The government has too much time on its hands.

You're telling me that this girl is supposed to be the smartest to ever take this exam and yet she showcases the intelligence of a doorknob? Amazing. The only time she was shown doing anything remotely smart was when they randomly decided she could examine the dead body of her brother. Like what? Why did she even know any of that? That's not something you learn in a book, not the way she did.

I don't know what's going on in the world building because it's so bare bones and just not good. Could I bring myself to care about the issues of these people? No, I cannot. It just feels very black and white with barely any thought put behind it. Really, it feels like a Saturday morning cartoon more than anything. Even the exam, which a lot of the backstory is hinging on, isn't just the thought of an evil government but the thought of a stupid one.

The writing honestly feels lifeless to me. It's so basic and there's no oomph to it. That only heightens how bad the rest of it is. The plot is fairly predictable. Nothing exciting or interesting happened throughout the part I managed to read. I had inklings of what would be happening and went to look it up, finding all my inklings correct and there being zero noteworthy plot twists.

I don't mean to be a debbie downer, but I got to mark this one down as a popular book that I cannot for the life of me figure out why people like it so much. Different strokes, I guess.

I found this book hard to put down. Although it wasn't really unique in the plot, I like the world the author has built. I could easily picture it as a tv series. Will probably read the next installment.
