Based on all the 5 star reviews of this book, I’m clearly entirely too low-brow to appreciate it.

Heartbreaking and beautiful. I've seen the movie, but the language of the book is so important in getting across the way Mr. Stevens (I just realized we never once learn his given name) thinks--and the ways he does not think about certain things, and what that costs him. An exercise in writing about a profoundly limited (and yet basically decent) man in a way that makes us sympathize and ache for him.

Quite a change of pace from books I normally read. Slow and considered, interesting to try and get into the butler's mind set. Liked Ishiguro's way of showing world events through the butler's eyes.

A bit of an odd book. I enjoyed it, found bits of it maddening and am glad I read it.

While this book could be rather slow, and had some language that wasn’t always easy to digest. I felt that stevens was so true to his character and it was so well written. I felt like I knew who he was by the end and could understand (to some degree) the way he became so close minded. Not sure I would suggest this read to someone to be reading for enjoyment, but I enjoyed the literary aspect of it and the change in pace from the easily digestible novels I typically read.

I can't believe I never read this before. So compelling and well-written. Highly recommended.

I love a book like this where it seems like not very much happens…but there is so much depth and richness in the characters and their thoughts, often unspoken. This was a lovely reading experience.
