I was really hoping for a more folkloric book about contemporary urban legends, but what it really is is a lot of eyewitness accounts of alleged sightings of abnormally large dogs with Anubis-like ears but surprisingly humanoid faces. This seems to be a common misperception or hallucination that apparently a lot of Americans have had, but I wanted more theory and fewer examples.

this is a book i expected to enjoy a lot more than i did, since i'm very interested in cryptids and urban legends. this was what i expected to some degree, it's a collection of people's encounters with strange, paranormal creatures. i did, however, expect more from the author. i thought she would follow up on the stories in some way, maybe dive deeper into the creatures featured in them. because she didn't, the structure of the book was a bit choppy. i enjoyed a lot of the stories and thought they were intriguing, but sometimes it got somewhat repetitive. it was still decently interesting and i liked the concept.

To be honest it’s not what I was expecting and I do wish there were more cave creatures but overall a fun read!

I have 34 books out from the library rn, clearly I can't manage my mental feeding schedule, and with all the competition, this one didn't win out. I think I could read a paragraph or page on the topic and that'd be enough. That's no comment on the author, whose writing I liked well enough in my small sample. I should probably meditate more to increase my attention span. Why do I feel guilty?

I listened to so much of this, but I can’t get past the constant Dog Men interruptions to chapters that have nothing to do with Dog Men. This author *refuses* to shut up about Dog Men and I found myself getting mad at her. She also relies 99% on eyewitness accounts and I would hear on the audiobook her introduce ludicrous stories with dead seriousness saying “daddysgirl69 reports that she saw a goat looking creature. But that area doesn’t have goats so it MUST be a Dog Man.” While I want to believe like Mulder, there are clear explanations for so many of these stories, but Godfrey shows no restraint in believing anything she’s told—as long as it could be related to a dog man. The most explainable instance is when a man saw “midgets” who told him to leave their property—Godfrey slightly admits that this is most likely a family of little people being harassed but then she suggests maybe they’re elves. Just crazy disrespectful to hear and a tedious, unorganized book that takes so much time referencing other books that I hope are better.

If you’re anything like me and love nothing more than to eat up eyewitness accounts of cryptid and monster sightings, then this book is Cici’s Pizza.
It does get a little repetitive when read in one go, but if you can’t get a kick out of stories about werewolves running around rural America, then I’m not sure we’re gonna get along.
