Okay, I understand why it's a classic. Camus pegs real trends in predictability of human behavior. He found a way to write down pieces of real life.
Living through a pandemic and reading this novel was so interesting in that the behaviors that Camus points out-- at first, frustration, then disillusionment, the people trying to cheat the system out of their denial, the mass depression and anxiety-- it's all there. It's all real.
BUT
this one was hard to get through because the characters just lacked much depth or personality
And honestly, it was overwhelmed how absent any female character was.
As the book is set in Northern Africa, I understand the relevance of this as women are often absent characters, even in every day life, they are submissive to the overwhelming presence of males. But in literature, it's so glaring and so obvious, it was just annoying to read. The only women were only mentioned in brief as objects of the men's obsessions. The only female character that said anything was the doctor's mother.
While this book definitely has it's place among classic literature due to the trends in humanity it so adeptly identifies, it's place should be very low among the ranks due to the uninteresting nature of the character writing and the complete lack of female presence within the novel.

Oyendo los gritos de alegría que subían de la ciudad, Rieux tenía presente que esta alegría esta siempre amenazada. Pues él sabía que esta muchedumbre dichosa ignoraba lo que se puede leer en los libros, que el bacilo de la peste no muere ni desaparece jamás…
Tuvieron que pasar tres años para que pudiese tomar coraje y leerme esta obra clásica de la literatura. Indudablemente cuesta creer que este libro fuese escrito en 1947 cuando relata exactamente el raciocinio que tuvo la población mundial durante la pandemia de la COVID-19.
Una obra que forma parte del genero del existencialismo, un género que, para quién no está preparado en enfrentar su propia realidad y la realidad del ser, puede causar terror.
Esperé tres año porque sabía que me podía generar terror, pero ahora lo leí en momentos de crisis, de polarización, de un mundo que jamás aprenderá a combatir el bacilo de las pestes, de las guerras, del mal y el egoísmo.
Al final, tiene todo el sentido del mundo que la peste y la guerra sean análogas. Siempre van a estar, a veces latentes, a veces dormidas, pero siempre están.
Cuando estalla una guerra las gentes se dicen: “Esto no puede durar, es demasiado estúpido”. Y sin duda una guerra es evidentemente demasiado estúpida, pero eso no impide que dure. La estupidez insiste siempre, uno se daría cuenta de ello si uno no pensara siempre en sí mismo.
Aunque sepamos que ciertos raciocinios para justificar ciertos actos sean estúpidos, no dejan de suceder.
Albert Camus me deja llena de sinsabores y de horas de reflexión. La vida es caos, la muerte es paz. Entre la vida y la muerte, a veces y solo a veces, encontramos la empatía y la ternura humana. ¿Cómo hacemos para que pueda ser más duradera?
Sí, definitivamente este libro no es para optimistas, pero que vale la pena para darse unas sacudidas de realidad y tratar de entender lo que no tiene explicación.
