Eye-opening

The more I learn about the "symptoms" of adult autism, the more I realize how closely they align with my personality and expressed behaviors. This book can serve as a kicking-off point for people who have troubles in social situations, with understanding nonverbal cues, and deciding why you "mask" in large groups. There's absolutely nothing wrong with us. We're just different. And that's okay.

Very useful, primarily as a breakdown of diagnostic criteria.

Bullet Review:

This is a very short book, but there's a lot of good information on the process moving from self-discovery to official diagnosis to disclosure. I particularly loved the questions detailing the parts of the DSM.

I will say this is a bit out of date at this point, not for the general information, but some of the specifics (namely the web links). Some of the websites are no longer in existence (I couldn't get to Rudy Simone's picture except when it was reposted on an independent personal blog); even the author herself hasn't posted to her own website, Musings of an Aspie, since 2015. Which doesn't mean this book is not helpful at all; it just means that you will have to do new google searches for new sources.

This book changed my life. Two years ago about this time of year I saw a TikTok video that sent me down a rabbit hole of autism research about myself and I had so much impostor syndrome that I couldn't decide whether I was autistic or not. After I read this book I had no doubt. It describes in detail ways in which the vague criteria of the DSM-5 for autism presents in people especially people who are masked I.e. hiding their traits. I recommend it to anyone thinking they might be autistic and I recommend it to any parents that think that their child might be. Once you read it I think you will have no doubts anymore as to whether you are or not. It's a very good tool for self-diagnosis or to spur you on to get an official diagnosis if that works for you. Everyone has to make that decision for themselves. I do autism advocacy on Medium I go by the same username. I also write about my journey writing and trying to get my novel published. Come follow me.The link is in my bio
