A satisfying "return home to solve the long ago mystery" story that hit all the right notes for me. I especially loved the journal entries dispersed throughout that helped connect you to the victim.

Another book that took me by surprise. Loved the characters and how diverse they were. Overall a solid read.

Not as good as "[b:Where the Heart Is|5168|Where the Heart Is|Billie Letts|http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51jGY6N4TeL._SL75_.jpg|1649]" but still a fun Billie Letts read!

I liked this book. I’m a big fan of Billie Letts because Where the Heart Is is one of my favorite books. So I picked this one up when I saw the author. Took awhile to get through the book. I liked the characters and enjoyed the descriptions Letts uses. I liked the way the diary entries helped develop Gaylene.

Back in 1972, in a town called DeClare, Oklahoma; a terrible and tragic act was committed. Two lives were lost….Gaylene Harjo and her son, Nicky Jack. Gaylene’s body was found stabbed to death but the strangest part of the whole situation was Nicky James. No one every found him. Everyone feared the worse had happened to Nicky James like his mother especially after his pajama bottoms were discovered by the river bank.

Thirty years have passed and everyone has forgotten. A stranger by the name of Mark Albright shows up in town. He starts asking questions about Gaylene and her son, Nicky James. The sheriff gets suspicious and checks into Mark. What the sheriff finds out about Mr. Albright will leave him speechless. So people don’t appreciate Mr. Albright coming into town asking his questions and opening wounds again. In fact you could say some people will go to the extremes to keep their secrets from being uncovered.

First off I have to comment and say that I thought Shoot the Moon was a pretty fine book. The characters heard my interest through out the book. One thing I thought that helped was the letters written back in the seventies that were put in almost every chapter at the end of the chapters. To me, what the letters did was to help build up the suspense or the story a little bit at a time. Shoot the Moon had me captivated to keep me reading till the very end. I can’t think of a single thing I would change about the book. If you have never read a book by Billie Letts then I feel sorry for you as you don’t know what you are missing. So if you don’t want to be left behind, pick up a Billie Letts’ book today.

I'm realizing recently that this is my favorite genre. This small town, buried secrets, serious drama murder mystery. The books always go so fast and I get entirely wrapped up in the storyline and how it's all unfolding.

This book was great. I wasn't as taken with some of the characters as I usually am but the mystery itself made up for it in this case. I just went through Billie Letts' list of works and I wish she had more books! I would pick them all up after reading this one.

SHOOT THE MOON tells a compelling story set against an atmospheric Southern backdrop. The setting is colorful, the characters are quirky and Letts' prose is engaging. I thought I had the mystery all figured out, but there were some surprises that caught me off-guard, leading to a killer I never suspected. Overall, this novel kept me engaged and entertained. I enjoyed it. I'd give it 3 1/2 stars if I could. Since I can't, I'm rounding up.

Great story,  twist ending, one or two loose threads.
