This book was a bit different from the usual Kate Burkholder stories. While it took place on a farm in Amish country, there really wasn’t a lot of Amish-ness to it. There also wasn’t the mystery of who-dunnit. It was mainly a story about Kate’s cop friend and her corrupt past. Entertaining but not what I was expecting.

Didn’t feel as this story had as much excitement as others. Was a different angle/storyline and was thinking Gina would have been disguised as an Amish woman based on front cover and title. Still a good read. Can’t wait for the next one with Kate Burkeholder.

I enjoyed this book, but not one of my favorites of the series. Features some of Kate's backstory, where she meets her friend Gina and how she decided to join the police academy and become a police officer. Gina befriended Kate and they became roommates during their rookie years, early on Gina made some choices that Kate did not agree with so Kate left and found her way back home to Painter's Mill where she eventually became Police Chief. Years later after more bad choices Gina finds herself on the run and in need of the help of her old friend Kate. While, it isn't one of my favorites, I did enjoy reading the backstory and loved Adam's character.

What I loved about the Outsider was that we get to know more about Kate's life before she became the Chief, and after she leaves her family. When Gina, also a police officer, is found wounded Kate is drawn back into their complex relationship. Gina was the one who took Kate in and taught her about the English way of living. Together they attended the Police Academy to become police officers. Both have taken different paths, and it at one time drew them apart. Can Kate trust Gina, who is also putting an Amish family in danger? This is another suspenseful novel that had be reading that last half until I finished the book. This novel can be read as a standalone but you do miss out on a lot of the characterizations.

I loved this book. The story is different from other Kate Burkholder stories in that it focuses more on Kate and her history then than a crime experienced by an Amish family. I really enjoyed the difference and learning more about Kate’s background. I love this series and can not wait for the next book!
