I read this book because my 9-year-old son told me I should. I can see why he thought it was funny, but it didn't do much for me. All of the mischief was just too EASY (how many times in one book can it really seem like great fun to eat huge quantities of cake and candy instead of meals?) and not especially exciting or imaginative. As a mom, I cringed at some of the ideals Nanny Piggins espoused, but of course this is what makes it so silly for some kids.

This book was comically fantastic. I highly recommend listening to this on family road trips. Greg and I laughed out loud - a lot on jokes that were very funny and way above my children's heads. Will definitely definitely definitely be reading more Nanny Piggins in my life. Absolutely.

"Oh yes," said Nanny Piggins. "I can regale people with anecdotes from my sordid past and think at the same time."

That's my kind of nanny. In fact, if resumes had epigraphs, I might have to ask her if I could use that quote on mine. It should certainly be inscribed on Nanny Piggins's calling card. After all, I'm just a librarian who used to sell kites for a living - Nanny Piggins is a pig on the run from a cunning ringmaster who has signed her to an exclusive fifty-year contract which stipulates, among other things, that she is to be shot out of a cannon on a daily basis.

YEARS after fanflailing from my friend Miriam -- years in which I recommended Nanny Piggins far and wide despite having never read it -- I finally read this story of Mary Poppins-style-nanny-finding gone horribly, horribly wrong.

I'm a little concerned about the enthusiasm with which I have pressed it on families. It *is* hilarious. And unexpected. And it makes sense that a pig in charge of children would lead to shenanigans that responsible adults would never consider. And goodness knows, the Cat in the Hat and Pippi Longstocking get away with it.

I'll keep telling myself that if a parent ever comes in to complain that it was, in fact, shocking.

Funny read-a-loud that both of my girls enjoyed!

I mean, I get it but I don’t like it. (The central theme is that Nanny Piggins lies, cheats, steals, and makes deliberately, appallingly bad choices, and these are the things that make her fun. The trope is tripe. Tripe, I say!)

How can you not love a nanny who considers uniforms and homework torture, who loves chocolate in any form, at any time and in copious amounts, and who has serious pie issues (but only for her own)? She also has a sketchy circus background, including an adopted Russian bear.
Complete with a careless and clueless father and possibly dead mother, this follows in the footsteps of other odd/subversive rescuing adult figures: Mrs. Piggle Wiggle, Nurse Matilda (aka Nanny McPhee), Miss Honey, etc.
Very satisfying, parts needed to be read out loud to passersby (e.g. when the aunt sings, several wrong guesses as to what the noise might be). Recommend to Dahl fans.

Read this again--It's simply too much fun. LOL-led several times

This would make a funny family read-aloud - how can a former circus pig turned nanny not be funny? The episodic nature of the story doesn't create much in terms of tension or plot, but the ride is still enjoyable and light.

Silly, but not earth shattering.
