Omg

Sade lived through some shit. What that is we don't know yet. But after the death of her overcontrolling father she inscribes into a private school. In her first night, her roomate Elizabeth disappears.

Plottwists and excitement await. Faridah Àbíké-Íyímídé takes toxic and dangerous tropes from stories and allows Sade to not fall for but dismantle them. The boundary overstepping arrogant boy is not a hot lover in this story. Sade doesn't wanna be "unlike the other girls". Most of the,
as we find out, rapists are seemingly normal boys from class instead of weird monsters.
It is refreshing to read a feminist book without the message feeling forced!

Why do these creepy boarding schools exist? Is it just for people to be able to write dark academia and horror stories about the people who are FORCED to attend? Honestly, between the costumes (I mean uniforms) the commandments (I mean rules) and the heathen-ous monsters (otherwise known as students), I don’t understand how they’re still around.

Like most YA books that take place in a school, boarding school has its bullies. The difference is that when their parents are the ones to ship them off so they don’t have to deal with them, it also means they aren’t dealing with horrible behaviors. So I knewwwwwww there would be truly awful characters. Was it who I expected it to be? Absolutely not!

I went into Where Sleeping Girls Lie on the remembered high of my adoration of Ace of Spades. I didn’t read the synopsis. I just knew what I had gleaned from the cover and seeing it on social media. But just like the author’s first book, I was left blown away by their takedown of systemic problems in schools. Only this book dealt with sexual assault.

I really loved that I seem to easily fall in love with the characters in Faridah Àbíké-Íyímídé’s books. Sade is an orphan who is seemingly thrown to the wolves of Alfred Nobel Academy, albeit by choice, without friends to help or guide her. She knows nothing about the school or its rules and from the very start of the story is playing catch up. She is really relatable is a lot of ways and likable because of that.

I was really hoping this would be a queer story, because Ace of Spades was. I went into it without expectations (that’s kind of a lie, because I expected to love the book and did), but I had my fingers and toes crossed. Now I know and I won’t be answering if it is or not…….. again I’m lying.

The beginning was definitely a little confusing because of how many characters there were, I genuinely could not keep a single character straight except for Sade and Baz for the longest time but it ended up making sense why there were so many characters in the end
I couldn’t tell you a thing I guessed happened in this book because I didn’t guess a single thing. The plot twists were definitely plot twisting for me

i didn't think that i had any preconceived notions about this, but somehow, i did believe that this was adult and also supernatural/horror???? i don't even think i heard that anywhere, i just started expecting it at some point and was waiting for it to go full tilt in that direction, so maybe that's why i felt slightly underwhelmed by this. it also felt like it could have been at least 100 pages shorter on the school drama aspects for there to be more plot focus. i also saw most of the twists coming, but again, i can forgive that a little because this is ya. also, i was hoping it would have been a lot more dark academia-y and a LOT LOT more gay. but still fun!

This book is HEAVY on the S.A. triggers so want to get that out first, take care while reading!

With that said, I really enjoyed this one (as much as you can enjoy a book with hella dark themes). I think I actually like it more the Ace of Spades. The narration was fantastic, the mystery in the story had me fully committed, and the character work had me feeling like this was a real school. The dark academia vibes were on point, and I think the heavy topic was cared for well.
