I DID NOT SEE THAT COMING! I saw part of the surprise coming, but honestly, without spoilers I cannot say a word. Already said too much perhaps.
Comparisons to "Where'd You Go Bernadette?" and "This is Your Life, Harriet Chance" are appropriate, but not nearly poignant enough. This one was a very worthwhile read.

in the beginning this novel seemed like it was going to be about the before vs after of motherhood and grappling with how your life turned out vs what you expected, and it does deal with those things, but then adds multiple issues on top of that, which makes it feel quite uneven and unfocused.

I absolutely ADORED this book! Read with Jenna picks have been increasingly up my alley, and this one deeply resonated. A woman in her mid-40s, estranged from her daughter, treks across London to deliver her a cake for her 16th birthday. As she fumbles through the city we get flashbacks to various points in her life and slowly uncover how she got to where she is now. So much of this was relatable, heartbreaking, and heartwarming. I laughed and cried, and finished it feeling very seen.

i really enjoyed this book, it took me a while to get through it though but I couldn’t put it down in the last third. i really like her writing style and the characters were very interesting, albeit flawed. there were a few plot twists that i didn’t see coming, and definitely would urge people to check up on some of the content warnings because they kinda come out of nowhere
Graphic: Sexual assault, Sexual harassment, and Child death
Moderate: Infidelity and Infertility
Minor: Death of parent
