A few weeks ago I randomly remembered this book and how much I enjoyed it in middle school. I found a used copy on thrift books and read it as soon as it came. Absolutely delightful!

I loved this. It was such a cute book, and I’ve always been a fan of books written in creative formats, like letters and such. By far the best Battle of the Books book I’ve read so far.

really cute and creative and clever and overall a lot of fun to read. kinda gives Roald Dahl vibes in terms of style, but with better content. I love that it was written in the form of letters and notes and you piece the story together through documents like a historian

Amusing. “Quite good. Cleverly written and quite interesting,” says 9-year-old Jason.

I think there were many, many clever jokes and the illustrations were very complimentary.

Another book I loved in 6th grade. Clever story, even more clever storytelling

Every bit as funny, clever, and charming as I remember it being. A perfect outside-the-box middle-grade book.

Utterly charming. This was one of my favorite books as a child and it has aged remarkably well.

So much fun and a quick read too. I'm already onto the sequel. I love that the author can develop such wonderful characters not with narrative but through letters, memos, artwork and even an opera!
