To much back and forth. Character growth was poor. Had a lot of potential only to fall flat

Phenomenal book from start to finish! Filled with lots of fantastic characters that were fleshed out really well and given thorough backgrounds. !!

i started the first book, the school for good and evil, back in 2014, even before the 2nd book came out and needed to know what happened to sophie and agatha. and then the second book came out, a world without princes, and i fell even more in love with the series because of the ending in that book. i started a fandom account not too long after because that’s how much in love i was with the story. then the last ever after came out, whose writing and lessons don’t match up with this book’s but whose ending i loved better. then the ever never handbook, which i got a first edition, signed copy of. then quests for glory come out (oof), and then a crystal of time (very good), and then this book, one true king. i started this series when i was 12 — the age people start attending the school for good and evil. and now i’m 19, older and hopefully wiser than i was, and it’s just so bizarre to me how i’ve managed to stay with a series and fandom for so long. and now there’s a netflix film coming out? wow. wow. time goes by so fast.

there were a lot of things i loved about this book — the characters were more fleshed out than they’ve ever been and you could tell soman’s writing had improved. the thing about me, is that soman was a screenwriter before this, and i could see it in his writing. but personally, i believe it’s better to go from a writer to a screenwriter than vise versa. it’s just more cohesive that way. anyways, i appreciate the character development tedros went through; he really did need to step it up to become a king of the most famous kingdom in the endless woods. but sophie’s development? that one was my favorite.

spoilers ahead!

between the ending scenes of the last ever after and one true king, i preferred the last ever after. maybe it was feeling it left me at that age, how i felt that everything was wrapped up so nicely and how i knew the characters were still living their lives even when it’s not being written while one true king ended with merlin’s death - it felt final. i was sad but it made sense. both endings had their unique feel to it, so i’m not complaining much; each had a different tone. the last words “the work is done”; i just love it. it speaks for itself as the last book in this world: the work is done.

Ahhh it feels weird knowing the seires has ended but yea it was a good read.
I love the character developement it was thrilling to read about all the secrets and learning more about this world alongside these characters. I will definitely remember this series and never forget it.
There was also some funny moments that highlight the characters' humor and personality.
