I was sobbing while reading this, and some parts of this book really had me spiraling. It was so deeply personal and written so candidly (reads like a journal). The author was honest that her relationship to her mother wasn't perfect, but they were still extremely close-knit. It just had me thinking again about how even if you have a complicated relationship with someone, it doesn't mean that losing them wouldn't leave you feeling profoundly sad.

This was a beautifully devastating telling of a daughter losing her mother, but in doing so, finding herself & a true connection to her culture. I had to read this slowly; some chapters eviscerated me. Trigger warning to readers who have experienced the loss of a loved one to cancer.

As the only child of a non-“mommy”-mom, I appreciated Michelle’s perspective and her many poignant takes on her ownmother-daughter relationship. While the story is deeply sad, as grief is, Zauner also manages to share so many funny/happy glimmers that make this such a joy to read. I love imagining Chongmi with her foot on god’s neck demanding some karmic justice for her daughter. Thank you for sharing your story with us Michelle. I am better for it. (Knocking off a quarter star because Zauner said her husband is out of her league which is just objectively false- they are both hot).

Food and grief and taking care of a parent. There is a lot in this book that resonates with my life right now.
