this. was. incredible.
every time i read a shakespeare play for the first time i fall in love with it. some of the language and images in this play blow my mind.
and we need to discuss the violence. it is BRUTAL. especially lavinia. i was on the verge of tears as she was dragged, pleading, from the stage. and that final scene ... one after the other. constant death.
very interesting that titus feels like he needs to kill lavinia because she has been 'ravished'. everyone thinks about how her trauma is affecting them, rather than the way it has utterly ruined her life. ugh
i watched the 2017 RSC production which was brilliant. the modern dress emphasised the fact that this could be any civilisation in decline. the blood was plentiful.

This was bloody, violent, and full of classical allusions. Also racism and misogyny. Hopefully the other plays we read will be better. 2 stars.

Honestly this play was mostly gross. I wish I had a better instructor in my Early Shakespeare class - he manages to make blood, gore, and revenge boring. However, I appreciate all the cool aspects that I gleaned from the play in regards to what I believe to be Shakespeare's mockery of tragedy plays .

Violent, tragic, and rife with misfortune and misery, Titus Andronicus is a fast-paced play that doesn't stop to breathe, and that makes it all the better.
Some characters are more compelling and interesting than others, and I do feel the play sometimes gets a little random (mostly when it comes to what it's known for), but it's still great.
