4.5? Yeah. yeah.

At the start I thought this was gonna be too YA-y for me, and I did kinda resigned-shrug whenever the focus shifted to the obligatory relationship drama instead of the spoopy stuff. But then - the spoopy stuff was so good!! This is a very creative, imaginative story, told in a format I enjoyed as a fan of found footage horror.

This is also kind of an honorary Flowerhead book, it has the vibe if not the cover. It would make a good pairing with House of Hollow with all the lovely, flowery decay. I didn't understand the *very* ending, it felt like a setup to a sequel, so I hope it will make sense when I read Our Last Echoes.

I'm going to be honest here: I definitely judged this book by its cover and underestimated it -well, by its blurb actually, the cover is gorgeous-, meaning I went into the story expecting the old and tired tale of a creepy little girl in a white dress who shows up to haunt random passersby - what can I say, I enjoy the classics (or the lousy reboots). But a few chapters in the story took a massive turn that left me completely hooked.
It felt like I was reading the Dark Tower once again (mostly [b:The Drawing of the Three|5094|The Drawing of the Three (The Dark Tower, #2)|Stephen King|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1370918050l/5094._SY75_.jpg|2113248] although it had a DT feeling overall) only with teens instead of the gunslinger. There is love (friendship, sibling and romantic), loss and grief; a large but diverse cast of characters; and plenty of horror - body horror, supernatural and even a bit of cosmic horror at the end.
I did have a bit of an issue at first with the format (faux-documentary) but got used to it eventually.

This book was honestly bought to get me free shipping. Boy am I glad I chose it. I couldn't put it down once I started. There were tons of twists and turns I never saw coming. It was a mix between something like the Blair Witch Project and something I can't put a name to. Really good read, I definitely reccomend if your into paranormal reads

Rules for Vanishing is unlike any book i've read in awhile!

We follow the ghost story of Lucy Gallows and the road where people keep disappearing. In an attempt to find her missing sister, Becca, Sara and her friends embark on the adventure of a lifetime.

The atmosphere? Spooky.
The friend dynamics? Adorable.
The multi-media components? Fun as heck.
Plus we always love some LGBTQ+ representation in YA.

The only downside is it slowed down significantly around the 60% mark and the ending was confusing. Otherwise, this was a great time and I would highly recommend!
