Not as good as Bunnicula, or its sequel, Return to Howliday Inn, but still a deeply imaginative take on the inner lives of pets.

Still solid entertainment, as kids' books go, but longer and more dialogue-heavy than [b:Bunnicula|281235|Bunnicula (Bunnicula, #1)|James Howe|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1348802537l/281235._SX50_.jpg|1142982], and more noir than horror in genre, so not as far up my alley. The main characters are still cute, but surrounded by a new cast of supporting characters, and absent the enigmatically charismatic title character of the first book.

Chester and Harold here being more sophisticated than most actual people in my life.

Really missed Bunnicula, though.

Cute but didn’t love it the way I love the original.

This was a really good story but setting up the plot took up perhaps the first 40% of the book. I had no problem but Em had a harder time getting into it until we hit 40%. She realized, hey this is a mystery and was excited and curious. The rest of the book went quickly. It was nearly twice the length of the prior book in the series.

That said, I loved the variety of characters in the form of cats and dogs. Em loved that I gave them all distinctly different voices. By the time we finished, she was ready to hear more. She wanted another from the same series. I think we'll need to mix in a different series after book 3.

I'd recommend this book as a read aloud. An adult reader will laugh at the puns that may go over the listener's heads but its a great opportunity to help listeners understand and notice puns.
