Not what I was expecting, but very interesting insight into Zweig's experience of the era he grew up in. It feels like a dramatic retelling but you can tell there's a nugget of truth. Found it hilarious that he ripped into his name-dropping acquaintance when he had spent the whole previous extract doing just that.

Stefan Zweig has a unique talent: telling whimsical and gentle stories set against the backdrop of tense, terrifying times. There's such an elegance to his writing even as you sense tragedy and hardship around his characters/narrators. These collections of stories give us a glimpse into what it might be like to try to navigate life among those times. Very charming!!

A window into the enchanting lives of the European bourgeoisie at the turn of the century packed with whimsically hypnotic tales.
