This book was such a surprise, it took me on a journey I did not expect! And what an emotional journey that was. The story genuinely took me by surprise and got me thinking a lot about it. This is the second book by Akwaeke Emezi and I love how challenging and daring their books are. It certainly challenged my thinking about love in many ways. Additionally, having read about the author themselves, I imagine this story is highly personal to them as they also grew in Nigeria as a queer person. I certainly learnt a lot about what it must be like for a queer person to grow up in and oppressive environment, certainly a book to recommend, especially to those who might not understand queer love and struggle.

i guess you can see the title of this book.
so you know how this is going to end.

but

this book is centered around so much more than the death of vivek oji.
he is just the backbone of this incredibly vivid story.

narrating through different povs can become super dull and boring BUT not in this case.
here, it is executed in the most seamless manner and you never even once get the thought of skipping a chapter to go onto the next one.

i was caught a bit off guard when there was a certain relationship development (which i’m not going to spoil) BUT AGAIN - every small detail of it was described SO wonderfully that i dismissed the reason this relationship was fundamentally wrong !IN AN INSTANT!

just do yourself a favor and read this book

This book was a wonderfully absorbing read, although it was very heavy. It is about children growing up in Nigeria, and one of them just doesn’t seem to fit in. Later in life he finds some safety and community in his childhood friends, but the world at large is dangerous for him. It is a story about grief and parenting a child who is different, and the joys of found family.

Wow. I absolutely loved this. A gut-wrenching ode to queerness and love, this book and these characters will be with me for a long time.
